A lot of people think only rich or wealthy people can own horses, but im here to stand up for the ones with a big dream! When I was younger, my family lived in the inner city and we weren't quite poor, but definitely not wealthy! My dream was to own a horse, though i never ever thought that dream would come true. Every time i would mention wanting a pony, i was bombarded with "every little girl wants a pony" "your dreams will change over time" "your way to young to be thinking about your future" Well, all i can say is i would NEVER have made it this far without those hateful comments! Those comments where the matches that started the burning desire inside of me to prove them wrong! Well enough about me, lets get into my tips & tricks for you this week!

We all know horse equipment is extremely overpriced! The reason behind it is, people who sell horse items know the value our companions have to us, so they know we will pay whatever we have to for something our animal needs. Starting off with brushes & bathing equipment! Lots of people spend wild amounts of money just to have a crappy brush that doesn't last long. Though some other people use their common sense and just buy human brushes. Mane & tail brushes are known to be quite harsh on horse hair, which can be another reason to buy a human brush, that is gentler on their hair. Another little trick that is less known: Did you know its actually cheaper to collect brushes and make your own grooming tote rather than buying a pre made one? Here's the estimate of a complete grooming kit VS a kit collected over time.

Pre made kit-$40-$50. Typically includes

1 hoof pick,

2 curry combs,

1 soft OR hard brush,

sweat scraper,

mane & tail brush,

& comb

Self made kit-$38 total

1 hoof pick-$1

2 curry combs-$7 each

1 soft OR hard brush-$8

sweat scraper-$3

mane & tail brush-$8

& comb-$4

It may seem like its not a big difference, but if you save a dollar on everything you buy you would be shocked at just how much you save! Now lets talk about another very important thing when owning a horse, tack. A lot of people underestimate how easy it is to make your own tack! I saved $20 making my own breast collar for my mare! I used $10 paracord and some clips around the house. I find it quite enjoyable making my own tack, and it makes it more special if I ever pass it down onto another horse someday! Here are some different tack item that are simple to DIY!

headstalls, breast collars, polo wraps, saddle sacks/pouches, latigos (can be made out of leather belts, make sure its STRONG!), fly boots & more! Here are some other things that you should NOT make yourself due to their important and specific details: girths, bell boots, sport boots, & more. Remember to always check online for design ideas if you need assistance DIY-ing!
