Supplements can be extremely expensive when caring for a high performance/elderly horse! Fortunately, not all horses need them. But when they do, you can often find yourself spending hundreds of dollars a month! Here are the five supplements I currently, and formerly, have given my horse while safely staying financially stable.

#1 Electrolytes are a must for a high performance horse in the summer and winter! However, I prefer feeding my horse salt during the winter months and electrolytes in the summer months. Depending on your location, you might find it cheaper to buy pure sea salt (or Himalayan) in bulk grocery stores rather than buying electrolytes. I currently feed my moderately active horse DuMOR Electrolast Electrolyte Supplement for Horses, 5 lb. at Tractor Supply Co. Its affordable, and lasts for a very long time! I highly recommend purchasing this in addition to providing your horse with Champion's Choice Trace Mineral Block, 50 lb. at Tractor Supply Co. (which you should only need to purchase once/year)

#2 Vinegar is an inexpensive way to quickly up your horses digestive system and keep them feeling great all year around! Do this by adding 1 cup of any type of vinegar to your horses trough regularly!

#3 If you have a mare, you probably understand the struggle of the heat cycle. That leads me to my third affordable supplement recommendation, Mare Magic. Whether you have a mare or a gelding, mare magic is a great way to supplement your horse throughout the year to keep them calm, healthy, and in great condition! You can also add basic herbs like oregano, rosemary, basil etc. as they are all great ways to up your horses overall health!

#4 Chia seeds/flax seeds are easy to find at your local grocery store and inexpensive to purchase in bulk. By adding 1tbsp to your horses daily feed, you can improve your horses digestion, mental health, weight, and many more things!

#5 Last but not least, by adding an extra source of fiber to your horses diet, you can up their overall health by a lot! Try adding basic foods like carrots, apple slices, beet pulp (or beets), alfalfa, etc.
